What We Do

What We Do

Council for Relationships is a nonprofit organization that strengthens interpersonal connections through accessible, specialized, and expert individual, relationship, and family therapy, clinical training, and research.

Counseling Services

Because life’s challenges are often complex and diverse, CFR offers a wide range of counseling services. We provide expert individual, couple, and family therapy with highly experienced, multidisciplinary professionals. With over 80 therapists and psychiatrists in-person at nine offices and community-based locations in the greater Philadelphia area and online across PA & NJ, we’re able to consider many different options for you and will do our best to find an excellent match for your needs. To keep our services affordable to everyone, we offer our counseling services on a sliding-fee scale.

Professional Education

Since 1948, CFR has been offering a post-graduate training program in couple and family therapy and has been certified by American Association of Marriage and Family Therapy (AAMFT) since 1972 as an approved training center, the first of its kind to educate clinicians and clergy in couple, family, and sex therapy. Today, our Post Graduate Certificate Program in Marriage and Family Therapy and our Master’s Degree in Family Therapy, offered in partnership with Thomas Jefferson University, educate the next generation of relationship therapists. We offer a range of other educational opportunities including APA and AASECT-approved continuing education workshops, our Post Graduate Certificate Program in Sex Therapy, clergy training opportunities, clinical supervision towards licensure, and individual coursework.

Research & Resources

CFR conducts research, which is incorporated into its community programs. The Transcending Trauma Project, a CFR research program since 1991, studies the lives of Holocaust survivors and their families in order to learn about the human response to extreme trauma. This research contributes to the field of mental health by providing essential knowledge for treating trauma victims. In addition to our research, CFR provides resources for the public on a variety of mental health topics. CFR’s Operation Home and Healing offers specialized clinical training programs for mental health professionals and members of the clergy who work with military populations.
