Council for Relationships offers an AAMFT-approved training program, which leads towards the designation of Approved Supervisor in Marriage and Family Therapy. Unlike other mental health disciplines, the field of Marriage and Family Therapy considers the training of supervisors to be critically important to ensure that only the best-prepared therapists become MFT practitioners. By training supervisors to use the best theory and practice to guide their approach to supervision, we contribute to the training of practitioners that bring the best theory and practice to their clinical work.
At CFR, we take this mandate seriously and offer an AAMFT-approved Supervision Program which includes:
- Didactic Component - 15 hours
- Interactice Component - 15 hours
- Supervision of therapists-in-training - 180 hours
- Supervision of supervision with an Approved Supervisor - 36 hours
These requirements are usually completed within two years, and
the program can be taken in its entirety at CFR or partially,
with some requirements being fulfilled in other approved settings.
Our program is one of very few in the country that fulfills the requirements for AAMFT-Approved Supervisor status in one setting. It is designed to fit the schedule of a busy practitioner who seeks this credential while continuing to work full-time. Also, in contrast to other programs, our pacing allows for the integration of the theory and practice of supervision over a two-year period, as opposed to intensive workshops that do not facilitate the integration of theory into the actual practice of supervision.
The flow of courses over the two years and the presentation of videotaped supervision sessions with on-site students for on-site supervision of supervision provides a unique, challenging and supportive learning opportunity. Not only will you achieve status as an Approved Supervisor, but you will experience the deepening of your clinical expertise as you mature in your role as supervisor and trainer.
Participation in this program enables you to supervise and sign for therapists seeking clinical membership in AAMFT, which is a credential important for state licensure. For those preparing for state licensure, your status as a licensed MFT and Approved Supervisor will be sought after by future therapists credentialing as Marriage and Family Therapists. Clinical and training settings will seek your expertise to train and supervise staff in their clinical practice and sign for their credentialing as MFTs. As the field of Marriage and Family Therapy matures in the years to come, this credential will offer many professional opportunities.
