Workshop Description

Internal Family Systems (IFS)  is an integrative approach to psychotherapy that combines systems thinking with the view that the mind is made up of discrete subpersonalities, each with its own viewpoint and qualities. IFS uses family systems theory to understand how these collections of subpersonalities are organized.  It is a cutting edge approach that offers a non-pathologizing conceptual framework for understanding human struggles, as well as being a clinical pathway to respectfully guide people toward lasting and profound transformation. Originally conceived as a trauma treatment, IFS has been successfully applied to a broad array of mental and physical health issues.

IFS is highly effective in treating a wide range of sexual problems and fills in gaps that other therapies do not reach. We each contain a complicated sexual story with internal characters, emotions, somatic responses and beliefs that influences how we experience ourselves sexually. When we find, befriend, and have the option to transcend this story, we gain access to our inner fountain of sexual energy, and can deepen intimacy with ourselves and others. Participants in this workshop will learn the process of guiding clients in this self-exploration.  In the process, participants will also learn more about their own internal system.

This workshop provides a basic overview of IFS concepts as well as case examples, discussion, and experiential exercises.

Learning Objectives

By the end of the workshop, the participant will be able to:

  • Identify core assumptions from the IFS model such as multiplicity of mind, Self, and the protective system.
  • Discuss how guiding clients through the “6 F’s” facilitates their self-awareness and self-compassion.
  • Demonstrate how exploring the therapist’s own internal system increases capacity to be present and effective with clients.
  • Articulate how IFS is applicable to clients with sexual intimacy issues.
