Sex Therapy with Orthodox Jewish Couples

May 9 @ 12:30 pm - 2:30 pm

| $54 - $79

2 AASECT-approved CE credits available

About this Workshop

Most therapists appreciate the impact of religious beliefs on a couple’s sexual relationship. In Orthodox Jewish couples, however, strict adherence to religious laws can profoundly affect sexual intimacy. For instance, premarital sex is prohibited, and sexual activity is strictly limited to specific monthly periods. This introductory workshop will address the etiology and treatment of sexual concerns in Orthodox Jewish married couples.

Sex between a husband and wife is considered sacred and positive. Oftentimes, however, some couples struggle with a disparate understanding and level of adherence of religious laws regarding sexual practices. Others have problems related to sexual ignorance and traumatization. In order to work with this population, a sex therapist must have a general understanding of the Jewish laws that govern beliefs and behaviors regarding sexual intimacy. Moreover, standard sex therapy protocol will need to be modified to adapt to the religious system of Orthodox Jewish couples.

Workshop Objectives

At the completion of this workshop, attendees will be able to:

1) Define many of the laws regarding sexuality within the Orthodox Jewish marriage.

2) Reflect upon and discuss areas of personal comfort and discomfort with Orthodox Jewish beliefs and practices regarding sexuality and intimacy.

3) Identify the systemic implications of disparate religious beliefs on the couple’s sexual life and helpful interventions in supporting stronger sexual and relational intimacy.
