SUMMARY:Navigating Dual Challenges: Addressing Perinatal Mood & Substance Use Disorders in Therapy
DESCRIPTION:This presentation explores the intersection of perinatal mood disorders and substance use disorders\, offering therapists practical tools for assessment\, intervention\, and support. Participants will gain insight into the unique challenges faced by birthing individuals and their families\, learn practical and evidence-based strategies\, and build confidence in navigating complex clinical presentations during the perinatal period. \nWhen perinatal mood disorders and substance use disorders coexist\, the risks to both parents and the infant increase significantly\, including heightened chances of poor attachment\, preterm birth\, and long-term developmental challenges as well as marital conflict and distress. Early identification and integrated treatment approaches are essential for improving outcomes and promoting long-term recovery and well-being. \nRegister Today\n\nLearning Objectives\n\nUpon completion of this session\, participants will be able to identify common signs and symptoms of perinatal mood and substance use disorders\, and how they may present concurrently.\nUpon completion of this session\, participants will be able to describe the unique clinical risks and implications when perinatal mood disorders and substance use disorders co-occur.\nUpon completion of this session\, participants will be able to apply attachment-focused\, developmentally sensitive strategies to support birthing individuals and their partners navigating both perinatal mental health challenges and substance use.\n\nAdditional Details\n\nInstructors: Ariel Stern\nDate: Wednesday\, November 19\, 2025\nTime: 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM EST\nLocation: Virtual\nContinuing Education Credits: 3\nTarget Audience: This educational activity is intended for behavioral health professionals\, including Psychologists\, Social Workers\, Counselors\, and MFT’s.\n\nLearning Levels: Intermediate\nRegistration Link: https://council-for-relationships.ce-go.com/navigating-dual-challenges\n\n\n\nCFR is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for psychologists. SUMMARY:Introduction to Attachment Based Family Therapy: Theory & Clinical Application
DESCRIPTION:This workshop reviews the theory\, research\, and clinical strategies of attachment-based family therapy (ABFT). ABFT is a manualized\, empirically supported family therapy designed to target family and individual processes associated with adolescent depression and suicide. Tested with diverse families\, including low-income and minority families\, ABFT is a trust-based\, emotion-focused\, process-oriented brief therapy. The model is organized by five treatment tasks that provide directionality. Using lecture\, discussion\, and therapy tape review\, participants will learn how this model helps families repair interpersonal ruptures that have damaged trust and how to rebuild emotionally protective\, secure parent–child relationships. \nRegister Today\n\nLearning Objectives\n\nUpon completion of this session\, participants will be able to explain the theoretical foundation of ABFT that guides therapists in therapy implementation.\nUpon completion of this session\, participants will be able to describe the purpose of the five treatment tasks.\nUpon completion of this session\, participants will be able to describe the strategies used in the five treatment tasks.\n\nAdditional Details\n\nInstructor: Guy Diamond\, PhD\nDate: Monday\, November 3\, 2025\nTime: 1:00 – 4:00 PM EST\nLocation: Online\nContinuing Education Credits: 3\nTarget Audience: This educational activity is intended for behavioral health professionals\, including Psychologists\, Social Workers\, Counselors\, and MFT’s.\nLearning Level: Beginner\nRegistration Link: https://council-for-relationships.ce-go.com/guy-diamond-abft\n\n\n\nCFR is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for psychologists. SUMMARY:Treating Stressed Out Couples: Interventions to Help Partners Navigate Stress & Improve Their Relationship
DESCRIPTION:As a couples therapist\, you’ve likely worked with clients who are either withdrawn or too dysregulated to engage in productive conversations. Sessions may start with frazzled\, angry\, or numb partners\, and just as progress begins\, emotions escalate or shut down entirely. \nOutside of therapy\, these couples are often overwhelmed—juggling parenting\, work demands\, caregiving\, finances\, and health concerns. The weight of these stressors seeps into their relationships\, making it even harder to communicate and connect. \nTraditional interventions like active listening and compromise may fall flat\, leaving couples stuck in session and struggling at home. Over time\, they may lose faith in therapy altogether. \nThis training will help you recognize the role of stress in these dynamics and equip you with practical strategies to keep sessions on track—so you can feel effective again and help couples rebuild connection. \nRegister Today\n\nLearning Objectives\n\nUpon completion of this session\, participants will be able to assess the role and impact of stress when clients present with dysregulation in session.\nUpon completion of this session\, participants will be able to develop strategies to help both partners take accountability for the role they play in their own stress.\nUpon completion of this session\, participants will be able to demonstrate use of a three-part system for helping couples manage stress within and outside the relationship.\n\nAdditional Details\n\nInstructors: Elizabeth Earnshaw\, LMFT\nDate: Wednesday\, October 29\, 2025\nTime: 1:00 – 4:00 PM EST\nLocation: Hybrid Event: Online & In-Person\nContinuing Education Credits: 3\nTarget Audience: This educational activity is intended for behavioral health professionals\, including Psychologists\, Social Workers\, Counselors\, and MFT’s.\n\nLearning Levels: Beginner\nRegistration Link: https://council-for-relationships.ce-go.com/treating-stressed-out-couples\n\n\n\nCFR is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for psychologists. SUMMARY:From Partners to Parents: Supporting Couples Through the Transition to Parenthood
DESCRIPTION:The transition to parenthood can be one of the most significant—and stressful—developmental shifts a couple will experience. Even well-resourced couples with strong relational skills often find themselves overwhelmed by changes in identity\, intimacy\, communication\, and caregiving roles. As therapists\, we are uniquely positioned to support couples in navigating this complex period\, fostering stronger relational bonds that promote resilience for the entire family system. \nThis 3-hour professional development training provides an integrative\, evidence-informed approach for therapists working with couples in the perinatal period. Drawing from attachment theory\, developmental psychology\, trauma-informed care\, and couple therapy models (e.g.\, Emotionally Focused Therapy\, Gottman Method)\, the training will offer conceptual frameworks\, clinical tools\, and reflective strategies for supporting couples through the emotional\, physical\, and relational upheavals of early parenthood. \nParticipants will learn how to assess perinatal relational challenges\, support emotional connection\, navigate the intersection of individual and couple-level mental health concerns (including Perinatal Mood and Anxiety Disorders – PMADs)\, and help clients maintain intimacy and teamwork during this major life transition. \nRegister Today\n\nLearning Objectives\n\nUpon completion of this session\, participants will be able to identify and describe common relational stressors experienced by couples during the transition to parenthood.\nUpon completion of this session\, participants will be able to identify and assess the presence of perinatal mood and anxiety disorders (PMADs) within the context of relational dynamics.\nUpon completion of this session\, participants will be able to apply at least three evidence-informed interventions or strategies to help couples maintain connection and navigate relational shifts in the perinatal period.\n\nAdditional Details\n\nInstructors: Amy Jones\, MSW\, MFT\, LCSW\nDate: Friday\, October 24\, 2025\nTime: 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM EST\nLocation: Online\nContinuing Education Credits: 3\nTarget Audience: This educational activity is intended for behavioral health professionals\, including Psychologists\, Social Workers\, Counselors\, and MFT’s.\nLearning Levels: Beginner\nRegistration Link: https://council-for-relationships.ce-go.com/from-partners-to-parents\n\n\n\nCFR is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for psychologists. SUMMARY:Radicalize Your Relationships: Relationship Anarchy in Practice for Systemic Therapists
DESCRIPTION:In part one of the Radicalize Your Relationships series\, we explored the what and why of Relationship Anarchy (RA). Now\, we let’s dive deeper into how to practice Relationship Anarchy. \nRelationship Anarchy is rooted in the philosophical and political belief that people have the right to form relationships based on their own needs rather than societal expectations. As systemic therapists\, we know that the personal is political. Oppressive societal scripts deeply influence the choices we make/what choices are made for us in our intimate relationships. Without a critical eye these prescriptive beliefs often lead to relationship dissatisfaction and harm. Relationship Anarchy is a radical stance against amatonormativity\, hyper-individualism\, enmeshment and power-over behaviors/beliefs. RA encourages us to commit to the well-being of our entire community which includes ourselves. \nThis workshop will explore in further depth the barriers that you and your clients may come across when seeking to embody this relationship framework. Rooted in radical honesty and compassion\, we will shed light on the covert ways supremacist thinking shapes intimate relationships. Participants will learn how to identify and deconstruct oppressive beliefs about what intimate relationships “should” be. Participants will be given concrete interventions to help clients hold the balance of autonomy and closeness through the lens of community interdependence. \nGet ready to have your expectations about love and intimacy challenged as we continue to strive for collective liberation! \nRegister Today\n\nLearning Objectives\n\nUpon completion of this session\, participants will be able to conceptualize and apply principles of Relationship Anarchy in clinical practice\nUpon completion of this session\, participants will be able to identify and deconstruct how systemic oppression influences intimate relationships\nUpon completion of this session\, participants will be able to describe coercive relating behaviors with interventions grounded in differentiation/individuation\n\nAdditional Details\n\nInstructors: Nicole Williams\, LMFT\, RYT\nDate: Friday\, October 17\, 2025\nTime: 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM EST\nLocation: Online\nContinuing Education Credits: 3\nTarget Audience: This educational activity is intended for behavioral health professionals\, including Psychologists\, Social Workers\, Counselors\, and MFT’s.\n\nLearning Levels: Intermediate\nRegistration Link: https://council-for-relationships.ce-go.com/2025-relationship-anarchy\n\n\nCFR is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for psychologists. SUMMARY:From Substance to System: A Family-Focused Approach to Opiate & Substance Use Disorders
DESCRIPTION:This 3-hour clinical training is designed for psychologist\, therapists\, social workers\, and healthcare professionals who recognize that substance use never exists in a vacuum – it impacts and is impacted by the entire family system. Grounded in systems theory and evidence-based practice\, this workshop explores how opiate and substance use disorders affect family dynamics\, communication patterns\, roles\, and intergenerational functioning. \nClinicians will learn how to use Motivational Interviewing techniques to engage both individuals and families in change\, address resistance\, and navigate ambivalence in recovery conversations. The training will also examine common co-occurring conditions – including ADHD\, chronic medical diagnoses\, and the unique considerations of substance use during pregnancy – and how these challenges complicate family roles and treatment planning. \nThrough the lens of medication-assisted treatment (MAT) and real-world case examples\, participants will learn how to address enabling behaviors\, promote healthy boundaries\, and support families in moving from crisis to connection. This training offers both clinical insight and practical tools to support healing across generations. \nRegister Today\n\nLearning Objectives\n\nUpon completion of this session\, participants will be able to list and define the core family roles commonly observed in systems affected by substance use disorders (e.g.\, scapegoat\, hero\, lost child\, enabler).\nUpon completion of this session\, participants will be able to explain the basic principles of Motivational Interviewing and identify two strategies for engaging family members in treatment.\nUpon completion of this session\, participants will be able to list three key considerations when discussing medication-assisted treatment (MAT) with individuals and their families.\n\nAdditional Information\n\nInstructor: Renee Calhoun\, LMFT\nDate: Friday\, October 3\, 2025\nTime: 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM EST\nLocation: Online\nContinuing Education Credits: 3\nTarget Audience: This educational activity is intended for behavioral health professionals\, including Psychologists\, Social Workers\, Counselors\, and MFT’s.\nLearning Levels: Beginner\nRegistration Link: https://council-for-relationships.ce-go.com/from-substance-to-system\n\nCFR is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for psychologists.
