Workshop Description

Psychotherapists are often challenged when working with clients who present with atypical sexual interests and behaviors, though we are very likely to see such clients in our clinical practices. This presentation will cultivate a greater depth of knowledge, awareness, and understanding of atypical sexual interests, with the goal of helping the therapist to discuss and assess situations of this kind when they arise.

DSM-5 uses the term “paraphilia” with the goal of distinguishing between mutually consensual atypical sexual behavior, and behavior that causes a person to be a serious threat to their own well-being or that of others. Terms such as “paraphilia” or “fetish” reflect that many alternate forms of sexual expression are still considered taboo and/or pathological, and in turn are stigmatized and poorly understood.

Participants will learn essential tools for effective assessment and diagnosis, rapport development, working alliance, and evaluation of ethical issues.  Finally, participants will learn to differentiate between clients who engage in consensual kinky sexual interest/behaviors and those who actually qualify for a psychiatric diagnosis.

Workshop Level – Intermediate

Learning Objectives

By the end of the workshop, the participant will be able to:

  1. Diagnose a paraphilic disorder according to the DSM-5.
  2. Differentiate between consensual atypical sexual behavior and behavior which is consistent with a psychiatric diagnosis.
  3. Determine levels of distress related to sexual expression.
  4. Examine therapist feelings and reactions to working with clients who present with atypical sexual interests
  5. Demonstrate increased awareness and sensitivity towards kinky clients.
