April 24, 2018 | The Society for Sex Therapy and Research (SSTAR) held its annual meeting at the Westin Philadelphia April 19-22, 2018. SSTAR is an elite membership organization made up of sex therapists and researchers. Council for Relationships is a long time partner of SSTAR and proud sponsor of this event. This year, several staff members and alumni of CFR’s education programs were in attendance.

Dr. Nancy Gambescia spoke at the annual meeting about Systemic Sex Therapy, a comprehensive and integrative method of addressing sexual and intimacy-based concerns. In this framework, the Intersystem Approach is used to treat infidelity as a relationship issue, even if there is a clear offending partner. Dr. Gambescia’s presentation explored the experiences of the clients, as well as the treating therapist, who often feel emotionally and intellectually tested by infidelity and the underlying factors that trigger it.

Dr. Stephen Betchen, Head of Supervision in CFR’s Sex Therapy Program, was also invited to speak at the annual meeting. He presented an in-depth case study using his Conflict Therapy Model. Dr. Betchen has written numerous texts and articles and his next publication is due in two weeks: Master Conflict Therapy: A New Model for Practicing Couples and Sex Therapy

Other speakers included:

  • Terri Conley: Leading expert in consensual non-monogamy
  • Emily Nagoski: Winner of the 2017 SSTAR Consumer Book Award
  • Elizabeth Grill: Discussing infertility and sexuality
  • Emily Impett: Promoting sexual desire and satisfaction in long-term relationships
  • Laura Kipnis: Author of “Unwanted Advances: Sexual Paranoia Comes to Campus”
