Hope’s journey to becoming a therapist

I did my graduate work in counseling psychology and, along with courses directly related to my graduate degree, I studied art therapy, expressive arts, and music therapy. I took those additional courses not so much because I thought I would be working with children and families, but because I believed these interventions were a powerful tool for connecting with both children and adults.

For the first five years after I completed my graduate degree, I worked in a small residential nursing home. That is when I first heard about CFR’s Post Graduate Certification program, one of the best training programs in the Philadelphia region. So in 2010, I began attending CFR’s program for Marriage and Family Therapy (MFT) and completed my licensure three years later. Continuing my career in therapy at CFR has left me with a sense that I’ve returned to my roots.

Using art to reach children

My therapeutic practice is unique because of my extensive experience of, and comfort with, working with very young children and their families. I often use art in therapy, as the process of doing art can help children become more aware of feelings and emotions children may be unaware of or only partly aware exist.

What a new therapy patient can expect in their first session with Hope.

In the first session, I’ll create a safe environment for you to explain the problem(s) you’d like to work on and to ask me the questions you may have about the therapeutic process.

The following are my two goals for therapy:

  1. Address your presenting problems in a safe environment
  2. Create a strong therapeutic relationship with you

I work from an array of theoretical viewpoints. As an integrative therapist, I select from myriad approaches and often use more than one approach to help you reach your mental health goals. I am committed to you reaching those goals. I will gather and assess data to create a therapeutic plan for you that fosters healing, greater self-awareness, and a vision for a positive future.

Are you struggling with the decision to book a therapy appointment?

If you have hesitant to begin therapy, I strongly encourage you to stretch outside your comfort zone when feeling the need for change. With understanding, compassion, and hope, you can turn adversity into an opportunity for positive changes and new beginnings.
