Workshop Description

Clients with eating disorders present clinicians with complex clinical issues that require specialized knowledge and skills to identify, manage, and treat effectively. While we clinicians often work with clients experiencing eating disorders, many of us lack the requisite expertise to do so; moreover, eating disorders and related issues are not always apparent, such that at times we may not even recognize that they are present. This introductory level workshop aims to provide an overview of eating disorder assessment and treatment, including signs, symptoms, assessment tools, treatment protocols, and prevention strategies; issues related to sexuality will also be considered. Discussion of treatment will include individual work as well as family and group modalities. Clinical examples will enhance our discussion, and clinical questions will be addressed.

Level of Difficulty: Introductory

This workshop is geared toward clinicians at all levels who have an interest in treating clients with eating disorders, including those with little experience as well as those seeking additional knowledge and tools.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Demonstrate a familiarity with three types of eating disorders and the underlying issues with which they tend to be associated.
  2. Identify two clinically effective strategies for assessing whether a client has an eating disorder while joining effectively with the client in the process.
  3. Define and be able to utilize two treatment interventions that can effect change for a client struggling with an eating disorder.
