When sex therapists help clients unpack and untangle issues about sexuality and race in session, it can be quite challenging. For some couples, sexuality and racial constructs are rarely addressed and when discussions emerge, it is sometimes difficult for partners to successfully navigate their own feelings. As a result, partners sometimes leave conversations unresolved. Similarly, for some sexuality therapists, if they have not addressed their own biases, values, and beliefs about race or their own sense of sexuality, their interaction with clients could be potentially harmful.

This workshop will explore a case that addresses the convergence of race and sexuality and sheds light upon the clinical experiences of a sexuality therapist’s attempt to deconstruct potential barriers of intimacy for some white men and their partners.
